The teeth of your black ditch are sweet like the rest

Of the thin-lipped, sharp-hipped
C D(no5) Em (riff)
Fierce things that animals show

Now what kind of county line

Holds her remains

Dm Bb
My family does own some land where the river is wide

At night I see my memories dimly dying on the other side

Dm Bb
I know that I am now all bitterness and tart

Anatomy to me is a homesick stomach and a broken heart

Now it's nothing but a bathtub drain

Verse III:

Dm Bb
The latter days are harder than I ever could've known

C Dm
Come back to retrieve me sometime soon

Naked swan-necked girls, your arching backs into the sun

The highway ditch's black clouds split the median and

                                              Bb
Breathing in of all the ribs of every bathing one

Verse IV:

Dm
And in those trash-pit-ponds you bathe and

Oh, how you all gleam

C
Mindlessly bright where you're wet in

Bb
Your eye-lashing, fluid-splashing, rapid-flashing

Dm
Canal-bleaching dream
For me

In my dreams to bleed your blouse

I smiled from my sleep to douse
    Dm             Dm7
The horror of this hour

Our boy on dark hills blurry crawling
G
His rain-glazed shaking porches falling

The Deep-Yard Dream (approximately): I tune the low E all the way down to a C for that drone that gets hit a few times in the song during the C chord, and I usually capo it at the 1st fret just for singing purposes. It's mostly a vaguely Travis-style picking pattern (same as Back-Lot World and The Tower really).
Intro: Fmaj, C...
Verse: Fmaj7, C, Am, Dm, Em (by sliding Dm up whole step)...
Chorus: Fm7, G (by sliding Fmaj7 up whole step), weird Am (by sliding that G rig up another whole step but making it minor), then back to the G thing, then back to the Fmaj7...the chorus basically just dances back and forth
between those 3 chords in various ways.

Tuning: Standard [Capo 1st Fret]

Most of my dreams are robberies
The family dies the child flees
Through backyards filled with enemies and
Fences fleshed by panicked knees and
Freedom is the deep-night there
The hurried-flight emergencies
Hospital-hell tragedies are finding me in countries
So far
From my home
So hard
The night’s grown
And it seems to holler and glow
So long

The neighborhood is ceaseless where
Backyards kiss like memories and
Nothing is like the hot nightmare of
Hearing them in melodies and
Dangerous cars pull in our driveway
Blast their brights into our windows and
Though they don’t have guns or knives they
Fill me with a fear that takes me
So far
From my home
So hard
The night’s grown
And it seems to holler and glow
So long

So when the backyards finally end
You’ll find me on dark-highway, send
My fear to all the highwaymen at
The foot of the dark-highway bending
Back into a home again
A driveway lit like a dead-end for

All the vegetation in the settled world is stirring
Im blurring into sun-burnt and heartbroken worrying
about how the day took such a long time to die
when it was reeking of women I once had on my side
but now that Ive found another smell to believe in
Im buzzing like hell just to hope I can breathe it
and resurrect the simplistic calm in some eyes
that are trying to find you or bury your night-
Am7 C
mind and it will take time.

Oh your tongue and the twilight marina
when so young and brave and still dreaming
getting to know you lash by dark lash
the rooms where you sleep in
the floors where you crash

and gas-stations are pleasantly blowing
thunder rolls for dresses youre wearing
on a body so unknowing
of what that blowings for our preparing

and patience is never affording
when prettiness and sweetness are pouring
out from you and
onto me and
dampness of sweat is the sweetest recording

and you can lay with your head on my body
the worlds of the night and disease try to rob me
all the vegetation in the settled world is stirring
but stillness and calmness are all that Im hearing
Am7 C
now and it will take time.

Part One: (Continued)

Am7 D
That sick man so shiny in his slump
Am7 D
Doubled over like a water pump
C D
He was dribbling out from his nostrils
C D
Onto his ankles leaking like Aprils
Am7 D
Yeah the thaw had already begun
Am7 D
We could hear the earshot from your cabin
C D
In the holy boldness your cheeks purpled and pinked
C D
There in the coldness with some sort of instinct
Am7 D
Oh the fluency, me with my hands cupped
Am7 D
Catching currency that you made it erupt
C D
The quiet of spilling right after the stilling
C D
Why it was chilling our hot windowsilling
Am7 D
I see your stature when breathing and turning
Am7 D
Smoking the black blur as if somethings burning
C D
Remember the gray-slate coming of some thrill
C D
The low sky of too-late up on Bunker Hill

Verse III

 Em C
In this local exit highway night
        D Em
We must grow accustomed to the sight
    Am Am7 C C7
And empty all surprise to see the capsize of the semis

 Em C
Cause nothing will stop the worlds physics from working
        D Em
Or the manner in which its situated and lurking
 Am Am7
Permanently so externally
           C C7
But theres pleasure and death in each second to be reckoned with

Verse IV

 Em C
And theres boredom and sex within each wild minute
        D Em
And the mildest hour has some deadly power in it
    Am Am7
And maybe ill cower with Yia Yias silk flowers
       C C7
As the motion sensor light does brighten and sour

(Strumming Pattern Changes here)

 Em C
On the back patio where the raccoons go
 D Em
Whining and divining through the grainy night glow
    Am Am7
The same as me as Im fumbling to see
   C C7
An inch off my face with a pinch of disgrace

Small Breakdown (no Banjo)

 Em C
Each photo of the summer is one in the same
       D Em
With a bloodshot number in the corner of the frame
 Am Am7
Dating each time that we became
C C7
Memorialized in the dimming

Repeat Chorus & Intro Riff x2

Verse V

 Em C
A bat circles above my brain
     D Em
As I walk down St. Joseph in the dusky graininess,
Am Am7 C C7
yes this gorgeousness is growing too dark too mention

 Em C
What becomes of the summer skin
        D Em
When it disintegrates in the blackness of the past
Am Am7 C C7
At last Ive become an extension

Verse II

C G (riff)
Or perhaps, well take naps in the sun
     C
(If) the suns collapse
                      G
Well make laps on the run
            A7
And run for-ever
            C Em (riff)
Neath their punish-ment

Verse III

C G (riff)
But punishment is not what you de-serve
C
You were meant
                      G
For something they re-serve
          A7
For early mornings
          C Em (riff)
When your heaven is blurred

Verse IV

C
Blurred and vague
                      G (riff)
Each word does age so fast
C
Like a plague
                   G
Its not allowed to last
         A7
For very long, but how
C Em (riff)
Fantastic and strong

Verse V

C G (riff)
While it does, while it buzzes free
C
All that was
                      G
Still courses through me
         A7
Infinite tons
       C
Liquid gallons
            Em (riff)
Of stunning suns

Chorus

D C
In some brittle part
D G
Of my little heart
I know I can
Plan a way to stay
    Cm
And say

Verse VI

C G (riff)
My oh my, youre so far a-way
C G
If I die, it could be to-day
          A7
And all I see
           C
All that I free will be
Em (riff)
OK
